Excuse Thread

Postby armchair de critique

In sport (in fact in most things in life) if you want to protect yourself mentally from a possible let down you will have ready an excuse for losing or not doing as well as you (and others) had expected.

In a life situation:

Man goes to interview for a job. He is well qualified, has relevant experience, is well turned out, speaks well, etc.

Whilst sitting in waiting room, the man realises there are over 50 applicants for this one position. In his mind the man has already made an excuse in case he does not get the job. The excuse is that there were 50 other applicants therefore his chances are reduced, despite his qualification, experience, etc etc.

So back to snooker.

Many players enter a tournament and as it is about to start they are asked about their form. They say "yeah hitting them well, feeling good" OR "haven't been sleeping well, back injury guv".......

Lets pre-empt the excuses we might hear during the upcoming WC in Sheffield:

1. ROS - didn't want to travel to China after Alps accident, therefore not in best of form (rusty caught cold by in form qualifier).

2. Selby - neck injury / fatigued after China Open / new baby strain / Leicester City in premier league relegation battle.

3. Robbo - still getting over the Masters whipping he was given by Murphy / Hungover from celebrating the Aussie cricket world cup win.

So a light-hearted thread but please feel free to add possible excuses.

What does he do, yodel it? :-D

Snooker players are pretty light on excuses in general, I'd say. Certainly a world away from football players / managers. I suppose it comes from snooker being an individual sport; there's more an attitude of "I just didn't play well enough" when players lose.

Still. Excuses I'd like to hear:

"I was put off by Alan's clownish trousers."
"My guts have been bad all day. Dodgy curry."
"I was beset by an existential dilemma midway through the fourth frame."
"My mind was on Michaela. How I miss the way she would respot the blue."

If Mags loses, it'll be due to his heinous neck illness.

I've often admired the courage of Maguire battling on when others with his condition would of downed tools. He is quite simply an inspiration to us all.

Mags and his troublesome neck rash complaint thing :hatoff:

Gary Wilson: "I just haven't recovered from the abject humiliation I suffered in The China Open Final. I realised then I am better at driving taxis. My future lies is getting drunken Geordies home. I accept this now."

Qualifiers after losing to Top 16 players "Too emotionally tired from playing three qualifying matches"

Top 16 players after losing to qualifiers "Had to face a form player who won three qualifying matches"

Nice picture Armchair. I think only you, Mantorok and I actually use pictures of ourselves. Oh and Snookerfan. Those painful years of surgery to look like his beloved Tabby have paid off. It's astonishing, the likeness.

I have cunningly got another picture for when Zhanger departs, not that I want him to obviously.

The next picture you have to look carefully at to appreciate it properly.
