I think Murphy needs a fluke or a foul from Selby to get over the line...

Unsatisfactory reasoning.
He should still be at about 50 50 given that he's now had 10 bites at the cherry against elite opposition.

Selby often plays his best snooker prior to a final. Plus he spreads himself too thin these days and is probably a spent force in finals.

And it's finally 10-6 Murphy. His first ranking event title for three years.
Selby loses yet another final
but Smurph deserved his 7-2 lead in the first session and that clearance to go 9-6 practically sealed it.

These days he doesn't play his best except on the practise table. And probably not even there.

Selby is so good at grinding away and showing such impressive resilience and guile to make it through the rounds that he seems to end up in finals even while he's not even close to being at the top of his game. The problem is that when you get to a final, that isn't usually quite enough...
I hope Selby can find some true top form come the WC.

that's like saying Higgins, Ding, Robbo, murphy, Mark Williams and Judd Trump are rubbish

No it isn't. It isn't at all.
You should take it for what it actually means... Unless you believe that Selby isn't in their league.

Amazing effort from Selby getting snookers. Not even Higgins or Davis at their peak could have pushed Murphy harder than he did there.

I agree with you here Wild. Selby never had an really easy opponent in all these finals. Also it's unfair to discount his Masters wins, a title there is worth more than a ranking event.

There is no hiding at the WC, UKs or Masters, hence his record in those events in finals is 4-4.
Selby suffers outside of these events. He's got a game good enough to grind through to finals but not good enough to win many of them against an opponent who is typically in better form.

His Masters wins can't be discounted no doubt, but his strike rate at ranking finals should be a lot better even with some of those players he has faced.
Selby has this tendency to start slow in ranking finals and against top players that will cost him like it has, so it's all down to Selby who can't start better or like he did at the UK Champs let a good lead slip up.

Selby also played David Gray in his first ranking final so that argument

Yeah but he was teenager who had barely done anything then. He was the Swail/Burnett in that situation.

Like I said, I'm only counting elite opposition, so.. legends of the game, more or less.
I'm sure if I count the elite opposition of the other top players I will find typically much better success rates.
Ding Junhui has won 7 of 10 ranking finals against really elite players , and 10 of 13 overall.
Neil Robertson has won 5 of 7 ranking finals against really elite players and 9 of 13 overall.
Mark Selby has won 3 of 10 ranking finals against elite players and 3 of 11 overall.
Yes congratulations to Mark on his Masters triumphs but I'm sure he sees his record in finals generally as a problem that he wishes to rectify rather than dismissing it as, 'Oh well whatevers my competition is tough.'

His strike rate should definately be a lot better in finals, that's a fact. Don't suddently try to say it isn't bad play from Selby just because he faced top opponents in those finals. It's all down to Selby who somehow when reaches a ranking final can't cope with them. The best he played was that 2011 China Open final against Trump and still lost.
