Still not sure whether they're going to last 32 or last 16 next - the original tournament schedule I saw gave them both options, and I haven't seen any update to this!

As to 'big guns' - depends who you consider a 'big gun' ... five players still unbeaten - Li Hang in Group A, Noppon Saengkham in Group B, Nick Jennings in Group C, Vincent Muldoon in Group E and Michael Leslie in Group D. Honourable mention to Akani Songsermsawad in Group D, aside from his loss to Leslie he's only lost 2 frames. Greg Casey was almost brilliant in Group F, but somehow lost 0-4 to Laurens De Staelen (who has lost to 3 of the other players). In his five other games Casey only lost 6 frames.

It may be my lack of knowledge of the players, but players who I know of and know to have a good track record seem to be heavily loaded in groups A and C, and Groups E and F looks particularly weak to me, Muldoon in Group E and Casey and possibly Duane Jones (with a 5-1 record) in Group F excepted.

Li Hang is unbeaten in Group A in what looked a really tough group to me, having only lost 7 frames in 7 matches too, so maybe I'm over-rating the other players. Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon is 6-2, David Cassidy 5-2, then both Mitchell Travis and Andreas Ploner on 4-3. Ploner has won 22 frames in 7 matches, even 6th place Edward Topham has won 16 frames.

In Group C, aside from Jennings being unbeaten, all of Ali Al-Obaidli (6-1), Scott Donaldson (6-1), Kishan Hirani (4-3) and Kurt Dunham (3-4) have been pretty competitive - even Dunham has won 20 frames in his 7 matches.

The revelation for me in Group B has been Declan Brennan, now in second place with just one loss. Zhang Anda is 3rd with 2 losses. Both have only conceded 10 frames in 7 matches.

I knew Canadian snooker had slipped, but the performance of their young players has been a revelation of the worst kind for me ...

Karam Namek, Eric Wu and Cheng Peng have each won only one frame, whilst Roy Zeng hasn't even done that well. I'm hoping they won't simply be put off and head off to play pool ... and the results won't exactly encourage tournament organisers, let alone the general public, who if they weren't already indifferent to this being played in Canada, may well be by now ... just nothing for the local press to write about.

How did they go from Thorburn, Stevens etc. to this?

Seems you're right!

They're going with the simplest solution in a way, but I'm not sure the best - top 5 in each group through, with the two players with the best records going straight through to the last 16 (Li Hang and Nick Jennings).

So who scraped in and who just missed out?

In Group A Andreas Ploner gets through with 4-4 as better frame difference (plus 4) than Edward Topham's zero frame difference.

In Group B Ricky Emery on 4-4 was a win (and several frames) better than Alexander Gauss and André Lackner.

In Group C Wong Yun Shing's last match 4-3 victory over Kurt Dunham was enough to send him through rather than Dunham, he finished with a 4-4 record and Dunham a 3-5 record (at one stage Dunham's record had been 3-1).

Group D is where I have a problem with the method of selecting who goes through - Jurian Heusdens with a 2-5 record, the same frame difference as Lee Paul (minus 7). Not sure whether the decider was that Heusdens won one more frame, or that he beat Paul. (Just not sure anyone should be getting through with a 2-5 record, would prefer to see Topham going through from Group A).

Group E sees Rhys Clark go through with a 3-4 record, but a (just) positive frame difference, whereas Rovin Franklin Dsouza has a negative frame difference.

In Group F Laurens De Staelen's 3-4 record and zero frame difference was enough to see him through ahead of Mohamed Hamdy's minus six frame difference.

The thing is is that for a huge period, the game in Canada was dominated by Cliff and Bill, then when Kirk came along and to a lesser extent Jim - though his achievements were still excellent, it became a selection which dominated the home events that would lead to a down turn in interest - and almost a reliance upon those, plus Alain when he came in to fly the flag for Canada. The reliance on these performing immediately would ask the question where was the support for the newer players coming through???

Been interesting following this a few names certainly expected to reach the top - Shachar Ruberg played John McBride in Killarney during the six reds.

Re: World under 21s Snooker

Postby roy142857

Last two quarter finals :

Noppon Saengkham (THA) 6-3 Duane Jones (WAL)
Akani Songsermsawad (THA) 2-6 Li Hang (CHN)

(Jones is 18, according to his profile on Welsh Snooker, so plenty more opportunities for him - did well in this, as did Akani Sunny Songsermsawad, who is 16 I think. Mind you, I think Tirapongpaiboon can only be about 17.)

So semi-finals will be:

Nick Jennings (ENG) v Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon (THA)
Noppon Saengkham (THA) v Li Hang (CHN)

Both matches 7pm our time.
