IBSF World Championships

Postby kolompar

Once again it will be held in Qatar from 17th to 27th November though as we know this time there's no tour card for the men's winner.

List of players entered is available on the IBSF website, men's has 95 players with England, Malta, Northern Ireland and Scotland the most notable absentees. Last year had 119 players from a record 53 countries.

Still a lot of good players, from the host country legend Ahmed Saif and top 9-ball player Waleed Majid, IBSF regulars Pankaj Advani and Andrew Pagett, Fan and Luo the two finalists of the World U21 from China and fresh from the main tour Brazil's Itaro and Igor :D

Only 88 players in the men's now, though the masters and women's also has much less entries than last year despite it being in the same venue.

Play started yesterday with Wendy Jans making the first century. All the favourites won comfortably apart from Dennis Taylor's protégé Jack Bradford who lost his first match to the aptly named Win Ko Ko from Myanmar.

Group stage over, Advani and Pagett got the top two seedings for the knockouts. Igor lost his last group match and then shockingly lost to Andreas Ploner in the last 64. Igor forced the decider from 3-0 down but played very poorly. Ahmed Saif and Muhammad Asif also lost in the last 64.
Pankaj has Itaro Santos in the last 32 and there's also a rematch of this year's World U21 final.
They are streaming 3-4 tables if anyone's interested

Just of curiosity I give a look at the Heydari vs Raza match and the standard is pretty good. Raza made a 95 break earlier with some difficult pots. Never had the chance to watch any IBSF World Championship match and at first sight, it looks interesting.

Yeah, the Pakistanis and Iranians are always doing well. Iran is guaranteed to have a player in the final as Amir Sarkosh plays Ehsan Heydari Nezhad in the semis.
Pankaj beat Luo Honghao easily, he will play the surprise of the tournament, 15-year-old Florian Nüssle from Austria in the semis, who beat former pro Andy Lee Chun Wai.
Pagett lost earlier in the last 32 to Kok Leong Lim of Malaysia.

So, Amir Sarkhosh is probably the third Iranian player in the professional tour, as it seems unlikely that Advani Will use his card even if he wins tomorrow.

No tour cards for IBSF events anymore http://www.wpbsa.com/wpbsa-statement-5/ New amateur competitions will be held by World Snooker Federation http://www.worldsnooker.com/world-snook ... ation-wsf/

So if winning the IBSF World Champs doesnt grant players a Tour card anymore, what is it's purpose now?

Many players participated because they wanted international experience. Also, this year it was still the most prestigious amateur event, with or without a tour card. Next year things will change. And Pankaj only wants to add to his collection of World Championships, no matter how worthless.

rofl

Nüssle was the star of this for me. Also Wendy Jans won her 6th consecutive title beating Ng On Yee on the way which is impressive as Ng regularly beats Reanne in the WLBS events.
Darren Morgan won the masters for the first time since 2012.
