World Games 2013 - Snooker 26 - 30 July

Postby roy142857

The 2013 World Games will be held in Cali, Colombia (officially called Santiago de Cali, it's Colombia's 3rd largest city and capital of Valle del Cauca state) from 25th July to 4th August.

The World Games are held in the year following the Olympics, for sports that were not included in the Olympics. They are organised by the International World Games Association with support from the International Olympic Committee. The 2009 World Games were held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and competitors came from 90 different countries.

3 billiard sports will be included in the World Games - carom, pool and snooker. Cloths will be supplied by Simonis. They will be played between 26th and 30th July.

Team GB entries for the snooker are Sam Craigie and Mike Russell, so I don't think Nigel Bond will be there to defend his Championship (He beat David Grace). (Darren Appleton has been entered for the pool).

Only other snooker entries I know of so far are Brendan O'Donoghue (Ireland), Dechawat Poomjaeng (Thailand) and Ajeya Prabhakar (USA). As well as the national entries, the IBSF will nominate 8 players to compete in the World Games (per the IBSF facebook page).

Wondering how (if?) the existing entries are affected by the new IBSF / World Snooker agreement ... perhaps Bond may be there to defend his title, and perhaps the 8 nominations from World Snooker are in addition to 8 from the IBSF and national entries ...

If all the top elite players were to come,
Here are the line-ups for a big new 12 team Team Competition.

What do you think?

And what sort of tournament structure should we come up with for this?

Every third shot each relay battles between
Team China: Ding Junhui, Liang Wenbo, Xiao Guodong
Team East Anglia: Shaun Murphy, Allister Carter & Stuart Bingham
Team East Midlands: Mark Selby, Tom Ford, Michael Holt or Ben Woollaston
Team Glasgow: Stephen Maguire, Greme Dott, Jamie Burnett

Pankaj Advani (India)
Aditya Mehta (India)
Liang Wenbo (China)
Lyu Haotian (China)

Saleh Mohammed (Afghanistan)
Noppon Saengkham (Thailand)

:-)

Despite the listing on World Snooker of the South African player as Manuel Francisco (runner-up in the 1969 World Billard Championship), it is actually his nephew and ex-pro Peter Francisco who is representing South Africa.

Quotes from the South African 'Road to Rio' website:

Team manager Ishaun Singh “Peter has just got back from Morocco after the successful defence of his All Africa snooker title. Irrespective of who his opponents are he’ll most certainly be a favourite.” Optimistic to say the least ...

A more moderate approach from Francisco himself "The World Games is like an Olympics for us and for a sportsman it’s extremely prestigious, especially as it only comes around every four years. Cue sports has only recently been added to the Games. It’s been a battle to get in so we need to impress".

Omar Al Kojah replaced by Brazil's Pedro Bohm, not the only change to the line-up, Luis Lemus of Guatemala replaces Saleh Mohammad, so first two results are:

Joe Perry 3 - 2 Bernard O'Donoghue
Aditya Mehta 3 - 0 Luis Lemus

I see Kelly Fisher is playing in the Women's 9 Ball Pool, won her opening match 9-1, and a familiar name in the Men's 9 Ball Pool is Australia's Robbie Foldvari, Britain's Darren Appleton is one of the favourites for that competition.

I'm told the name is right because Peter's full name is Manuel Peter Francisco

In other cue sports at the World Games, Darren Appleton made it through the first round of the Men's 9 Ball Pool, but only just edged Mohamed Ahmed El Assal of Egypt 11-9, whilst Robbie Foldvari lost to Japan's Yukio Akakariyama 11-7

Fairly easy win for Kelly Fisher in her 9 Ball Pool quarter final, beating Norway's Line Kjorsvik 9 -1 (Not guaranteed a medal yet as unlike the Asian Indoor Games, there IS a bronze medal play-off betwen the two losing semi-finalists). Fisher plays Chou Chieh-Yu of Taipei in the semi finals.
