We have 20 experts providing scores which means the match will be played over 180 frames.

In the event that the match finishes 90-90, Pink Ball's match result will be the tie-breaker to decide the winner.
This was based on a random draw from all panellists.

1988 Steve Davis

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Davis

Steve won his fifth of six world titles in 1988, beating Terry Griffiths 18-11 in the final. He beat Virgo, Hallett, Drago and Thorburn to reach the final that year.
He played in 13 events in the 1987-88 season, winning 8. He had a 100% record in finals that season, winning the 1987 Hong Kong Masters, 1987 International Open, 1987 UK Championship, 1988 Classic, 1988 Masters, 1988 Irish Masters and 1988 Matchroom League.

2013 Ronnie O'Sullivan

Image

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_O%27Sullivan

Ronnie won his fifth of (so far) seven world titles in 2013, beating Barry Hawkins 18-12 in the final. He beat Campbell, Carter, Bingham and Trump to reach the final that year. It was the only tournament he played that season (aside from one PTC event).

2013's Ronnie O'Sullivan will travel back in time 25 years in order to play 180 frames against Steve Davis at The Crucible Theatre.

Image

30 year-old Steve has the advantage of having played on the table to win the World Championship that year in front of the same crowd who watched him win, while 37 year-old Ronnie has the advantage of having witnessed the subsequent 25 years of snooker history.

There will be a clash of styles, but will The Nugget's safety skills and tactical ability prevail, or will The Rocket's magic within the balls be too much for his opponent?

And who will the crowd favour?

We're halfway through the match with 10/20 panellists having submitted their scores. One player has built a small but significant lead.

If one player reaches 91 frames won before all the panellists have submitted scores, I will call the match over. So make sure you get your scores to me soon so that you don't miss out on contributing your expertise.

I think the years drawn are good for both players. I'm not sure if 1988 was Steve's best year, but it can't be far from it. He couldn't really have hoped for a better draw for himself.
Ronnie is also lucky to have one of his World Championship winning years drawn and it certainly makes the match intriguing. It's hard to know if 2013 was one of his best seasons, quite simply because he didn't play. He did perform very well in that year's World Championship though.

How do you think Ronnie will cope with the 1988 conditions? There will be no distractions such as mobile phones and computers between sessions, no pandemic. Will he be drawn to the things he did to spend time in his childhood? Will he go and visit his 12 year-old self and give himself a bit of a pep talk?

I forgot to mention the referee for the match. My apologies for that oversight.

It is of course John Williams donning the white gloves. How will he handle Ronnie?

John Williams wouldn't take any of Ronnie's nonsense. He'd stick a rocket up his ass. Which is probably the story how Ronnie got his nickname of the Rocket

He also did half of the 1976 World Final at Withenshaw Forum. The senior ref, Bill Timms, had started the match but made a couple of dubious free ball calls. On the second day, Reardon filed a complaint about Timms to the tournament office. A short while later it was announced that Timms was feeling unwell and would be replaced by John Williams.

Mysterious bite mark on his neck?

Indeed, no more World Championship finals for nosferatu Timms. Instead, he's contracted to officiate at the annual Transylvania Club Handicap tournament.

DAY 1: Session 1

gmg wrote:My 5-4 scoreline is based on Davis being at his absolute peak in 1988. He won 4 ranking events from 6 across the 1987/88 season and also won the two premier non-ranking events that season - the UK & Irish versions of the Masters. He also kicked off the following 1988/89 season by winning the opening two ranking events. He won all those tournaments without much trouble too. Stunning as Ronnie's achievement of winning the 2013 World Championship without having played in any other event that season was, it still can't match what Steve achieved in 1988 and it's a credit to O'Sullivan's unique talent that he still comes within a frame of Steve under these circumstances.

Score: Steve Davis 5-4 Ronnie O'Sullivan

5-4 to Steve.

DAY 1: Session 3

SnookerEd25 wrote:My scores for the final, which won’t go down well:

STEVE DAVIS 7-2 RONNIE O’SULLIVAN

A 1988 Davis at, or near to, peak form dominates a petulant O’Sullivan, who would surely have put up more of a fight had he been more active during the season. That, and his running battle with referee Williams - who, according to O’Sullivan was “looking for trouble - he just wouldn’t let me play my own game out there” was no match for an ‘in-the-zone’ Davis who put frames away in almost robotic fashion.

Score: Steve Davis 17-10 Ronnie O'Sullivan
