So you think he'll be ranked...?

For sure. He reached a ranking event final and numerous other semi and quarter finals.

Sorry, bad communication, I'll be more specific. So you think he'll be ranked what number?

So how many pre-ranking era players do we think actually deserve to be in snookers top 100 to push this current lot out of it? I'm guessing Fred Davis has made it anyway despite being well past his best when the rankings came into play. The most obvious candidate is Joe Davis who would probably actually top the list if he were somehow included. Walter Donaldson and John Pulman would be two more shoe-ins and Horace Lindrum won the World title once, albeit in controversial circumstances. Tom Dennis reached a few World finals and there was also Willie Smith. Can't think of too many others.

I mentioned this list down the club and one of the older guys there said that Terry Parsons might be a good candidate for a mention. But, like Jonathan Barron, I wondered if he might be outside the qualification criteria.

He also said that Terry Parsons had absolutely no interest in turning professional. But, if he had, he may have had a World Championship win in him.

And he also said that Terry Parsons had the slowest backswing he had ever seen. :?

I tried to find some video of Terry Parsons playing, but I couldn't find any.

Big thanks to CSPrince who has dug up a few of the missing places of birth:

Dave Martin: Derby
Steve Duggan: Doncaster
Gary Ponting: Bristol

Would be grateful to anyone else who can fill in any of the gaps:

John Read
Bill Oliver: Southport?
Bob Harris: Liverpool?
Barry West
Jack McLaughlin
Nick Terry
Mark Wildman: London?
Nick Dyson: Manchester/Hessle/Bury/Macclesfield?
Mario Morra: Georgetown?
Billy Snaddon

John Read was a Brummie, although I can’t confirm Birmingham as his POB 100% (could have moved there as a youngster and grown up there); it’s a starting point though

Re: All-time ranking list

Mark Wildman was from Peterborough, I’m pretty sure and Bob Harris a cockney (could be wrong about Harris)

Hamlyn Who's Who of Snooker lists the foloowing:

Jack McLaughlin - Belfast, NI

Barry West - Wickersley, nr Rotherham, Yorkshire

..it also contradicts some of the above as follows:

Dave Martin - Wheatley Hill, Co. Durham

Steve Duggan - Thurnscoe, Yorkshire

I'm dying to see who will be no. 1.
Have a bad feeling about this, I reckon it will be between Davis and Hendry since they were no. 1 for the longest. :-(

Could well happen actually as they were more dominant across a 10 year period than any of the Class of 92 ever were. No big deal if they are though, lots of Ronnie fans will get their knickers in a twist but that's fine. Will just be interesting to see whether Davis or Hendry come out top if that is the case. I suspect Hendry but could be wrong.

gmg wrote:-I’ve compared notes with Hamlyn’s 1988 book Who’s Who in Snooker to see if there are any notable absentees from the list and probably the most notable is the late Steve Longworth who was a regular top-32 player back in the 80’s and made quite a few TV appearances and even beat Kirk Stevens at the Crucible one year. I’m fairly certain that he won’t be appearing in the top 100 but to not appear in the top 200 is a surprise as in my book he achieved more than several names who have already appeared on the list even if some of his best performances came in non-ranking events (1985 English Championship, 1991 Mita Masters). For the record the others who appeared in Hamlyn’s book without appearing on this list are Roger Bales, Dave Gilbert (the 80’s version), Ken Owers, Joe O’Boye and Jon Wright. Of these, Owers and maybe O’Boye were the only other ones I may have expected to scrape into the top 200.

-

I’ve already highlighted above the half-a-dozen players who made it into Hamlyn’s 1988 Who’s Who of Snooker without making it into Chendufan’s top 200. But the opposite is also interesting i.e. established players from the time who were not deemed worthy of a profile in Hamlyn’s book but have made it into Chengdufan’s roll of honour more than three decades later. The book only focused on current day pros so that automatically excluded retired players like John Pulman, Gary Owen, Warren Simpson and Roy Andrewartha (who amazingly retired the same year as he made his Crucible debut in 1984!). But otherwise here are the Hamlyn omissions in order of how they appear on Chengdufan’s list:

Patsy Fagan
Eddie Sinclair
Mario Morra
Paddy Morgan
Patsy Houlihan
Mark Wildman
Paul Medati
Bob Harris
Bill Oliver

They’ll be glad to finally have the record set straight :pal:

Solid player, King. A three-time Crucible Qualifier, he must be one of the unluckiest players to play there given his draws :

1984 : Steve Davis (3-10)
1987 : Steve Davis (7-10)
1991 : Stephen Hendry (4-10)

I can remember Warren reaching the final of the Mercantile on ITV. That was a big event back then. He lost to Steve James, who claimed his first and only ranking title. The thing I recall about Warren was that he was the most frantic middle finger tapper ever! About ten taps on every shot!

Also a regular in the Australia team in the old World Team Cup with Steady Eddie and John Campbell.
