It would have been Medati's birthday today. A happy coincidence.

Re: All-time ranking list

Postby gmg

Medati was better known of course for giving the Hurricane a black eye during the 1986 Mercantile Classic. Surprised he's made it this high on the list given that he never won a match on TV and never got close to breaking into the top 32 on the official World rankings. One of his two TV appearances was actually against Alex in the 83 UK Championship, the other against Thorburn in the 88 British Open.

Re: All-time ranking list

Postby chengdufan

Looking at Medati's results, being this high on the list does raise the eyebrows. I think he's a beneficiary of the lack of depth in the professional game in the early 80s, as well as the sparcity of ranking events back then. He got as high as 29 on my list on the back of two decent showings in 1985 and held that position following the World Championship until the next tournament, the Matchroom Trophy in October. This netted him the majority of the points he needed for his ranking here.

All that said, I'd argue that it may not really be a false position for the Salford man with Maltese parents. If he had been a professional in his prime years, he would surely have been more of a contender. Turning pro at 37/38 though was perhaps a little too late.

I’m surprised he was only on TV twice. I thought I remembered him cropping up more frequently than that. :chin:

Don't really remember Henderson's Grand Prix final run but definitely remember the match with Jimmy White in the World Championship earlier that year. If White had lost he was out of the Top 16.

Exactly the same for me. I remember his match with Jimmy fairly well. I thought he played amazingly and thoroughly expected him to be the next big thing.

Re: All-time ranking list

Again a bit surprised that Henderson & Wildman aren't a little higher. Does this mean Wildman is the worst player ever to appear in the Masters? No major surprise I guess as he only got into the 1983 field due to some bizarre selection criteria.

Re: All-time ranking list

Postby chengdufan

I suppose any players born before about 1955 (with perhaps one or two exceptions) will probably have a false ranking as they simply didn't have the opportunity to play in any ranking events in their 20s.
Wildman's first ranking event came for him when he was 44.

This is pure speculation, but Dyson's ranking timeline suggests that if he had applied himself a bit more in his 20s (the 1990s), he could have achieved a lot more in the game.

Be fair - he was inventing a lot of innovative things at the same time as trying to hold down a professional snooker career.

Re: All-time ranking list

Only thing I can remember about Jason Prince is he beat Fred Davis 10-5 in the Pro-Tour ticket play off in 1990. It was during the short period where they introduced a new system whereby new applicants for membership of the WPBSA (or main tour, as we know it today) were required to play off against the players at the bottom end of the rankings. As it happened they opened the game up to anyone the following year, so dear old Fred soldiered on regardless.
