Him and Ian Graham were the two gloved players I remember. There was another Dave Gilbert around at the same time, no relation to the one playing now. Nigel had a very fast and furious cue action. Not a particularly quick player but when he addressed the cueball his feathers (or waggles) back and forth went at a hundred miles an hour.

Good name check! Barron's best result was winning the World Amateur Championship in 1970 so he must have been a top player in his time. Winning the World Amateur usually means the player will go on to a strong pro career.

This ranking list has been determined looking at every result from every ranking event in snooker history. Unfortunately, the first ranking event was in 1974 and so rankings came a bit late for Barron. In fact, he didn't have the opportunity to take part in a single ranking event.

There will be 5 wildcards in the upcoming all-time World Championship I'll be running, so who knows, he may be one of the players selected to take part in that. :-)

Jonathan Barron passed away only a couple of weeks ago. He was undoubtedly one of the best players in the world throughout the 60’s and early 70’s, when the professional game barely existed. He could surely have had success as a professional in the 70’s but for whatever reason decided not to take the plunge. Anyone who won three successive English Amateur titles in those days was a great player.

Re: All-time ranking list

Postby badtemperedcyril

Houlihan is one of my all time favourites. Jimmy White used to say he was the “best player he ever saw”. Certainly to beat John Spencer 11-3 in the 1965 English Amateur final in front of 1,200 people at Blackpool Tower Circus must have been a fine performance. He also beat Ray Reardon in the semi-final, 6-5, from 1-5 down. He also won the ITV Television tournament the same year. By the time he turned professional he was well past his best.

Oh no. I did not know that. There are some older guys at my club who said he was one of the best players they had ever seen. My condolences to his family and all his friends at the Mevagissey Social Club where he used to play.

Robin Hull was one of my favourite players. Always very fluent and a good break builder. I think he had a medical condition which stopped him from playing mid career, which was a shame as I think he had the potential to be in and around the top 16 for a long time.
