Thanks mate!
For the all-time list, I've set it up so Excel does most of the work for me, but it still takes about 30 minutes to update the list at the end of a tournament.

The current rankings on the rankings revisit thread take more time to keep updated because I have to create a new calculation for the specific tournament and then input the scores from every match.

All good fun for me though :-)

The great John Pulman. A fantastic match player and something of a showman. Pity so much of his best years were spent bereft of competition and spent touring the clubs giving exhibitions. It showed what a great competitor he was when he reached the 1970 World Championship final, where he recovered from 13-27 down to Reardon to 33-34 before Ray took the last three dramatic frames. Pulman also reached the semi-finals at the Crucible when in his 50’s. He should have took it to a decider as well when Spencer needed a snooker with only one red left.

He was 50 years old at the time of the first ever ranking event, the 1974 World Championship. It is remarkable he made this list at all really.

Pulman is going to be a very tough draw for whoever gets him in the upcoming all-time World Championship.

Re: All-time ranking list

Postby badtemperedcyril

Indeed it is. He was a stalwart of the professional game throughout the 50’s and retained the World Professional title with great dignity against all comers between 1957 and 1968, at a time when there was no money in the game. Even though he was knocking on a bit in the 70’s, he probably should’ve done better as he was such a class act. Whereas most of the top players then were guys who’d played through the 60’s amateur ranks (Reardon, Spencer, Gary and Marcus Owen, Edmonds, David Taylor, Houlihan etc) played more of an open potting game, Pulman played “like a professional”, tight cue ball control and shrewd safety. Unfortunately, by that time he liked the booze too much. Many a time he left young Alex Higgins strung up like a kipper with their drinking exploits. No doubt they had some fun but Pulman could definitely have won more as an older man. Even in that 1977 World Championship he was badly hung over for at least one session against Spencer. Despite all that he is remembered as a great champion and character, and, a fantastic commentator in the 80’s.

But that's irrelevant. He should get points for his WC wins.

I remember when Michie reached the semi-final of the 2002 LG Cup. Good potter, but average breakbuilder. He lost to Chris Small, the year that Small won it.

But my abiding memory of him is this:

Sinclair was hugely respected on the amateur scene and a stalwart of the Scottish team at the Home Internationals throughout the late 60’s and 70’s.
He famously lost a drinking contest against Bill Werbeniuk, when, trailing by 37 pints to 36, he passed out!
