2012 UK Championship - Barbican Centre, York

Mark Selby won his third ranker. He beat two of the almost top players en route to the title, Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson. However, he managed to avoid Trump, Maguire and Higgins, all of whom fell early (Trump lost to Mark Joyce in the first round. Maguire and Higgins lost in the second round to Stuart Bingham and Mark Davis).

While the top break in Selby's 10-6 final win over Murphy was only 98, a breaks record was created in the Championship, with 3 players recording maximums: Andy Hicks, Jack Lisowski and John Higgins.
I have noticed a rash of maximum breaks being made in the last couple of years. I haven't checked the detailed data, but they appear to have been a lot more frequent in this period of history than in recent years.

17-year-old Luca Brecel was the surprise performer in the event. He won six matches to reach the quarter finals, beating Scott Donaldson, Peter Lines, Liu Chuang, Peter Ebdon, Ricky Walden and Mark King, before losing a deciding frame to Murphy.

I think I've been labelling some of these tournaments incorrectly as PTC events. Actually, I now think the European ones were a separate set of events, also minor ranking, but not contributing to the PTC Grand Final qualification.

And we've had tournaments held in cities, towns and villages, but this is the first time an event has been held in a place described as 'an area of land'.

Re: Rankings revisit - a trip through history

Mark Selby was really now looking like the real deal, of course winning the Masters in 2008 and 2010 were great but he did seem to be slightly lacking in the ranking events, winning the UK championship in 2012 was a sign he was surely going to win the world championship sooner or later.

Was this something to do with the ‘World Series of Snooker”? Launched in the nineties, it quickly died a death , was revived a decade or so later and quickly died a death again. Can’t quite remember how it worked but it seemed to be some sort of ‘breakaway’ tour, although a lot of the top players played in it while maintaining their presence on the main tour so maybe it had some kind of backing from the WPBSA. I’ll have to look into it further...
