John Higgins had a emphatic return to form with a win in Cardiff. It must be said that on paper, his run to the title doesn't look the most challenging, but you can only play who comes in from of you. He did beat top 16 players Stephen Maguire and Liang Wenbo and compiled 6 century breaks in the tournament, including 3 130+ efforts.
Ben Woollaston was his opponent in the final, the Leicester man reaching that stage of a full ranking event for the only time in his career to date. Woollaston's high break in his 9-3 defeat was a meagre 59.
There were a number of upsets in the tournament.
Number 1, Mark Selby, lost to Luca Brecel.
Number 2, Neil Robertson, was beaten by Gary Wilson
Ding Junhui lost to Lee Walker in the opening round (Walker's first win in a ranking event for around three years).
And Ronnie O'Sullivan lost to Matthew Stevens, who has been inching towards dropping out of the top 64 of late.
