2008 World Championship - Crucible Theatre, Sheffield

Ronnie O'Sullivan won the title, easily beating Ali Carter in the final despite only making one century break.

Although the winner was unsurprising, there were quite a few shocks in the event, Carter's run to the final one of them of course. No one would have expected Liang Wenbo to reach the quarter-finals, or Mark King to beat Mark Selby in the first round. And the losing semi-finalists being Hendry and Joe Perry was quite something.

And what were the chances of both finalists having made 147s in the earlier rounds?

It was certainly a memorable championship.

For the 2008-09 season, with the Bahrain Championship being added we are back up to 8 ranking events.

73 players have retained their professional status, 64 through the official rankings, and 9 through the 'one-year' list.
23 of last year's pros are no longer on tour. Robin Hull has retired due to medical issues (though happily we know he will return). And 22 have dropped off the tour.
The 23 are replaced by 12 returning pros and 11 making their debuts.

As with the previous few years, for most events we have unseeded players playing each other in the last 96. They then play players ranked 49-64 in the last 80. Last 80 winners play players ranked 33-48 in the last 64. Last 64 winners play players ranked 17-32 in the last 48. And last 48 winners join the top 16 at the venue.

2008 Northern Ireland Trophy - Waterfront Hall, Belfast
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Nort ... and_Trophy

Ronnie O'Sullivan won a second consecutive ranking title, easily beating Dave Harold in the final. Harold had had quite a run, beating Walden, Dott, Lee, Maguire and Higgins to get to the final. He was no match for The Rocket though, who had had a somewhat easier route, facing Doherty, Perry, Hawkins and Carter (in a repeat of the recent Crucuble final).
This was Dave Harold's first appearance in a final for 14 years, which is the longest gap between 2 final appearances for any player. He highest break in the tournament was only 81, which he achieved twice.

QFs:
Dave Harold (23) 5-2 Stephen Maguire (2)

2008 Shanghai Masters - Shanghai Grand Stage
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Shanghai_Masters

Ricky Walden won the title impressively, after reaching a final for the first time. He beat form player Ronnie O'Sullivan in a tight and high quality match, 10-8.
After qualifying, he beat the likes of Stephen Hendry. Neil Robertson, Steve Davis and Mark Selby. Quite a run! He would also go on to win the inaugural 6-reds World Championship in Thailand in December.

Graeme Dott pulled out of this (and the next event, the Grand Prix) because of a broken arm sustained while playing football.

After beating Jamie Burnett in qualifying, at the venue Jamie Cope lost his first match 5-2 to Mark Williams. Despite only winning 2 frames, he was able to compile a 147.

2008 Grand Prix - Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Grand_Prix_(snooker)

The Grand Prix reverted back to a standard knockout format in 2008 and moved from Aberdeen to Glasgow.
The changes suited John Higgins, who won his first ranking title since the '07 World Championship.

His opponent, Ryan Day, was featuring in a final for the third time. He was again unable to break his duck, having lost to Shaun Murphy and Dominic Dale in finals in 2007.
Higgins took a substantial lead of 7-2 in the final. Although Day was able to then win 4 in a row to peg him back to 7-6, Higgins eventually won 9-7.

Judd Trump reached a semi-final for the first time after beating Ronnie 5-4 in the quarters. That match was a surprisingly low-scoring one, with only 3 breaks over 50. Trump's best was a 51.

QFs:
Judd Trump (26) 5-4 Ronnie O'Sullivan (1)
John Higgins (7) 5-3 Ding Junhui (24)
Ali Carter (4) 5-3 Steve Davis (42)
Ryan Day (9) 5-1 Jamie Cope (17)
