It's interesting that he's 9th in these rankings, while Ronnie is down at 16th.
Officially, Ronnie is seeded 6th and Ding 17th.
I don't think Ding was that far out of form this season really, he just skipped all the European PTCs and didn't win one of the main rankers. Ronnie entered only a couple of tournaments, but won a big one...

2016 World Championship - Crucible Theatre, Sheffield
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Worl ... ampionship

Defending champion Stuart Bingham fell to the Crucible curse, losing to Ali Carter in the first round. Carter was one of 7 qualifiers to win in the first round, which feels like it might have been a record.

Two of the qualifiers, Ding and McManus, faced each other in the semi-final. I don't think this has happened before either.

Mark Selby won the title, his second. He only faced one of the 16 seeds en route to the title, Marco Fu, though did beat Ding Junhui in the final, who we rank in the top 16. Selby led throughout the final. Although he did get close mid-match, Ding never fully recovering from falling 6-0 down.

The World championship final Selby was 6-0 up and Ding did on a few few occasions get within being 1 frame behind but he just couldn't get level and Selby kept pulling away.
The 2nd frame of the match was a slight turning point as Selby won it needing a snooker.

2016 Riga Masters - Arena Riga
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Riga_Masters

Neil Robertson won his 12th ranking title, beating Michael Holt in the final.

Darren Morgan had a remarkable run after qualifying to claim one of two wildcard spots. He beat 2 amateurs as well as Zhao Xintong, Ken Doherty and Xiao Guodong to reach the semi-final. I'd have to double check, but I think this was his first ranking event appearance since he lost his professional status in 2006.

John Astley also had a notable run, beating Joe Perry and Jimmy Robertson to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

Yan Bingtao claimed his first three wins as a professional, beating Mitchell Mann, Fraser Patrick, and Martin Gould to reach the last 16.

QFs
Darren Morgan (-) 4-2 Xiao Guodong (55)

Anthony McGill claimed his first ranking title, beating Kyren Wilson in the final. Is this the sign of some fresh blood coming through to challenge for major titles?

In addition to the surprise finalists, two of the quarter-finalists were notable.
For the second successive ranking event, an older unranked player reached the latter stages. This time it was future pro David Lilley, beating Mark Williams and Robert Milkins among others to reach the quarter-final.
And Sunny Akani made a very ealy impact in his career by defeating Ben Woollaston, Mark Davis and others to reach the same stage.
