2013 Welsh Open - Newport Centre

Stephen Maguire won his fifth ranking title. The final was a topsy-turvy affair, with Maguire first leading by two frames and then Bingham leading by 2, before Maguire came back to win in the decider. It's the first time I can recall seeing such a +2 -> -2 frame-swing not resulting in a win for the player making the comeback.

Pankaj Advani had something of a breakthrough run, beating the likes of Ebdon, Murphy and Dott to reach the quarter-finals.

2013 World Open - Hainan International Exhibition Centre, Haikou
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_World_Open_(snooker)

Mark Allen has started to become a World Open specialist. Winning this one means he has won two of the three editions of the event, and it can be argued that really, the first time it was held it was a completely different tournament. When Robertson won it in 2010, it was held in Scotland and was best of 5s up to the final.
Allen's wins this year and last year are his only 2 ranking titles up to this point.

In this year's event, The Pistol dominated all his matches, winning 5-2, 5-2, 5-1, 6-2 and 10-4.

Yes, I thought at the start of the season that he would likely drop out of the top 16 by the time of the World Championship. With two events to go though (PTC Finals and China Open) it looks like he will be 12th. There's quite a big gap between him and those below him (Fu, Stevens, Dott and Williams) in the provisional rankings. It shows what a poor season Williams has had that he hasn't caught up with Ronnie.

I predict he'll be in 5th or 6th after the Worlds but it will be very interesting to see.

Neil Robertson won his seventh ranking title, beating Mark Selby in the final. It was an easy victory for the Australian, although he only managed 4 50+ breaks in the match.

It was mostly an all-star cast in the latter stages of the event. Jack Lisowski's run to the quarter-finals was noteworthy though. He beat Judd Trump in the first round, giving him an overall 3-0 head-to-head record over the number 1 through the 12-13 season.

I'm pretty Mark Selby missed the final black for a maximum in the China Open that year. I can't remember which round it was though or who the opponent was.

That's right, good memory. Wiki and snooker.org have the details. It was his first round match against Mark King.
He joined fellow pros Doherty, Pinches and Hull in this 'achievement'.

I remember watching the Doherty one :-)

We increase from 99 to 130 professionals who will compete in the 2013-14 season.

Only one pro was properly relegated at the end of the 12-13 season: Andy Hicks.
Stephen Lee and Stephen Hendry are still officially pros (and would make the number up to 132 if we counted them).
Joe Jogia dropped off because of his ban.
Floyd Ziegler is also not included in the 130 as he is not going to play.
