A boring player who just makes up the ranks/numbers.
Too afraid to take risks, hence why he'll always be a nobody in the overall history of snooker.
To quote the great Tony Drago: retired today, forgotten tommorow.

Barry Hawkins does take risks though. He plays pretty attacking snooker. He has a decent all round game. He also doesn't spend forever on shots unlike a certain Australian player.

Fun fact of the day: Barry Hawkins has an almost identical World Championship record to Ding Junhui.
It could be argued that his primary drawback from a popularity point of view is that he plays under an English flag.

Are people coming round to Barry Hawkins?
I always got the impression on here that people didn't like him.

The lazy myth that he ‘ruins tournaments’ and folds in finals has got a lot of traction on this site over the last few years.
Also, that Twitter hate-campaign you launched didn’t help

How many titles has he won?

So your argument is that if Hawkins had won more other titles he'd be more popular?

I’d expect a player who’s won 15 ranking titles plus the Masters to be more popular than a player who’s won 4, yeah

Yeah, I guess.
But then there are plenty of multiple title winners who aren't particularly popular. At least not around here.
You are right though, when a player wins things it gives the poster more options when engaging in on-line arguments.

World and UK Champion Peter Ebdon was known for his popularity in the game.

If only Ronnie O'Sullivan and Jimmy White were Chinese, they might have been a bit more popular.

I would suggest that people like Ronnie and White transcend national biases.
I wouldn't class Ding in the same category. Xintong might be the 1st of the transcending Chinese players.
I wasn't making a point specifically about Chinese players though, that was something you've chosen to interpret. I said, non-English.
If Hawkins played under the Thai flag, for example, I think he'd have much more neutral support. Or any of the European countries. Or most other global non-uk countries.

Doesn't the 'hate' for Barry mainly come from Ronnie fanatics? Hawkins' win over him in the 2016 WC might have something to do with that.
