remember when they announced the saudi arabian masters tournament and it was going to have a bigger prize pot than the worlds but then the pandemic started and it never happened.

I think it was more about them trying to get into new sports. A lot of boxing is being held in Saudi Arabia now. Even if the participants in the main event are, say, both British. They're a rich enough country they can just throw money at these sports to host them there.
I guess the money was popular with the WST.
