I’m not Trumps biggest fan but he’s not wrong is he? Everyone loves Virgo and “where is the cue ball going”, and Dennis saying how great the crowd is every other ball, but I think Hendry and Davis should be a lot better than they are. This week Hendry has been qualifying his statements with “from what I’ve seen of player x”, which translates to, I have not bothered watching them and have no idea so I’m going to make stuff up. Even Doherty puts them in the shade. BBC should try and get Foulds and McManus. But first order of business is to shoot Smurph.

Davis and Parrott are going thru the motions, it’s so obvious there is little effort put in like foulds or McManus it’s like a job for life and I bet it pays very well

This has been true since at least the early 90s though. And perhaps earlier.

Also worth pointing out that the BBC had both Foulds and McManus in the past, but have chosen not to retain them. Part of the problem, in any sport they cover, is they prefer household names whom people recognise in favour of lesser known (to Joe Public) figures despite the latter usually being way more competent in their knowledge and analysis. Hence we get the likes of Davis and Parrott.

I disagree. 80s/90s pundits and commentators were far more attuned to their surroundings, knowledge, and depth of the sport. I would say these failings have only started to grow in the new century, ironic since we now have such technology as the Internet so there is no excuse for a lack of depth in one’s competence.

It's a real shame the Eurosport poached McManus. He used to be a great addition to the triple crown coverage.
Remember that time he joked about given Higgins a lift up to York after one of the Cazoo ones, and then wasn't even at York? I wonder if they gave him the run around, and he went off to Eurosport for a bit of stability.

I’m not sure it’s down to ‘poaching’. I’m sure the BBC position is the best remunerated, and that effectively gives them the pick of the pundits. Like I said, they had Foulds and McManus at one point, but their remit is not about knowledge - it’s about recognition; so they’ll always pick a ‘face’ who has casual knowledge, over someone less known whose ‘qualifications’ are far better. Hence Parrott and Davis stay, and Virgo and Taylor are retained longer than necessary, and those who are not required end up using their abilities on channels where the criteria is different.

Yes Taylor needs more spellings and Parrott needs some more times tables

I reckon Angles chose to leave for Eurosport because he simply wanted to work on snooker year round, rather than being let go by BBC or poached by Eurosport. Just a feeling I get.

Also, think who the BBC are catering for. Their audience is generally more ‘casual’ than ITV or a specialist sports channel. It’s very easy to see the average viewer wanting more of Taylor’s anecdotes and Parrott’s chirpy scouse banter than “that boring Scottish bloke waffling on about cue action and technique”

The BBC may pay better for the three tournaments they do, but I doubt those three combined would be more than every tournament.

Last I heard, which was probably at least 10 years ago, pay for commentators was £800 per day. So obviously it's going to be a lot more than that now.

Probably not for ‘the likes of McManus’ (for reasons already stated) but I bet Parrott & Co. are on nice little retainers…

+1
I like Virgo in general. The way he can almost turn a match into a story and narrate it the way he does. But “where’s the cueball going” has been flogged beyond death.

Virgo still has his moments, I think - like this tournament two years ago when Yan won (whatever happened to him?
) his commentary on the final mini-session with Hendry (I think) was the perfect complement to the match. But he plays to the crowd too much, I think; that there was no audience in the arena made him focus more on his job at hand.

I couldn’t disagree with him. This is one of the main reasons why I watch Eurosport instead of the BBC.
