This player qualified for the Crucible on four occasions and lost in the 1st round each time.
On his debut, he lost to the defending champion
On his next visit, he lost to the eventual champion
On his third visit, he lost to a future (world) champion
On his final visit, he lost once again to the defending champion
Can you name him?

Not Marcus Campbell.
Good guess, because he made 4 appearances & lost to Mark Williams, Shaun Murphy & Ronnie O’Sullivan.
But he also lost to Anthony Hamilton.

Although, if Anthony Hamilton wins the lockdown World Championship this will become a correct answer retrospectively...

Mark Davis has made 11 Crucible appearances & has won 3 matches. Interestingly, he has played 8 World Champions in his 11 visits & has beaten 2 of them : (John) Higgins & Doherty.
