Correct! At last.
The World Matchplay was conceived by Barry Hearn, and ran as a prestigious event for five years. Featuring the top 12 players in the world, at one time it was the most lucrative tournament on the calendar, the first snooker tournament to offer a top prize of £100,000. The last event ran in 1992, and was won by Wattana. Televised by ITV as a replacement for the World Doubles Championship but dropped after 1992 when they decided to run down all their snooker contracts. The full list of winners was :
1988 : Steve Davis (bt. John Parrott 9-5)
1989 : Steve Davis (bt. John Parrott 18-9)
1990 : Jimmy White (bt. Stephen Hendry 18-9)
1991 : Gary Wilkinson (bt. Steve Davis 18-11)
1992 : James Wattana (but. Steve Davis 9-4)
Well done, VD
