Mark Joyce got to the Riga Masters final I think in 2019. Mark Davis got to The English Open final in 2018.

Marco Fu reached the final of the Masters in 2011. Who did he beat in the 1st round?

Stephen Hendry has lost in the 1st round at the Crucible on 4 occasions. Name those 4 years?

Correct :hatoff: I still look back and think he only should have lost 2.

Actually I think I’m slightly incorrect as the Bingham match may have been 2000?

I think it was an odd anomaly that he went out in the first round either side of his last title? :chin:

I’m still taking the win though, anyone got a problem with that? :wild:

Yep it was 2000 but you have redeemed yourself nontheless. I saw Bingham and and didn't check the year and assumed you put 2000 lol

Who first coined the phrase ‘the Grinder’ as a nickname for Cliff Thorburn?

Jack Karnehm?

Not Jack, but well spelt anyhow - his surname trips a lot of people up <ok>

None of the above. Don’t think SF could talk yet when this comment was made.

Both Alex Higgins and MC Alan Hughes have claimed credit at various times, and I believe both were prone to making stuff up. Possibly neither. :-)

I’ll give you Alex Higgins; I was always under the impression he’d said it (rather saltily) after the 1980 World final. Cliff kind of liked it and it stuck.

Maybe it’s apocryphal, but you have the question

I believe I've seen a clip of Higgins referring to Cliff as the 'Grinder' after the 1980 final. Not sure if that was the first usage of it.

Here is the Alan Hughes interview in which he claims to have invented the name, but he wasn't even doing intros back then, so who knows what this is about: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_s ... 968289.stm

Ok, salty comment question:

Who said this after losing to his opponent in a 1980s ranking final:

"It wasn't my idea of snooker and I tried to make things happen but in the end I was totally bored. I expected more from a final. It's the worst thing that could have happened to [redacted] as he probably thinks he can win a tournament again playing like that".

I think he called him a 'grain' after that final. It was only used as a reference to Canada.
