Who beat Tony in his last Crucible appearance, in 1992?

Re: Never Ending Quiz

In regards to the previous question I fell in the trap of assuming Cliff Thorburn was ranked 2nd then lol

Not Ebdon; on debut he bt. Davis and Martin Clark in 92, then fell to cagey ol’ Terry Griff in the quarters

Well now...

Qualifier Bond went down 10-7 to Alain Robidoux

Alan McManus made the semis that year, despatching no.8 seed Mike Hallett, fellow qualifier Muck Price, reigning champion John Parrott in the quarters before losing to Jimmy White 16-7.

The question continues...

Parrott. Fairly sure it was '92, because the infamous 'miss' which Tony had replaced and then Parrott potted through the gap made the championship review.

Exactly that

It was 5-4 early in the second session, with both scoring well, when Lan Ganley replaced the balls after a miss in an obviously wrong place enabling Parrott to pot a red he was previously snookered on. Tony was irate, fell apart, and lost 4-13. He never qualified again.

Q: Long before Mark Williams, a player who was well ahead in a frame attempted a series of 'one-handed' escapes from snookers in a 1983 World Championship match. The referee, John Williams, actually stepped in and warned the player against doing this, saying that it could be considered inflammatory. Who was the player?

Sounds like the sort of thing Dean Reynolds would do...

...so that’s my guess

Alex Higgins seemed too obvious, but I suppose we should eliminate him one way or the other

Peter Francisco didn't reach the Crucible that year.

I'd say the player in question is more widely-known than Reynolds or Francisco.

Alex Higgins was involved in an incident with John Williams in that championship over a decision whether the cue ball reached a ball on or not. A long argument insued. Higgins flicked what appeared to be a 'V sign' at Williams and - perhaps more remarkably - that was actually the lead story on the front page of the Daily Star the following day.

Higgins didn't play snooker escapes one-handed, though.

Tony Knowles? I'm not sure who Alex Higgins opponents were that year but Knowles did seem like a pretty flamboyant player in the 80s and wouldn't be surprised if he tried to play some one handed shots.

Re: Never Ending Quiz

Knowles didn't play Higgins and eventually lost a titanic semi-final battle 16-15 against Cliff Thorburn.

The one-handed shots in question weren't an attempt at flair, but annoyance at the fact Higgins was playing on requiring an unlikely amount of snookers.
