I want to say Steve Davis.

Hallett went 7-0 up against Hendry in the 1991 (IIRC) Masters, only to lose the match.

Davis went 8-0 up in the 85 World final, only for DT to make the comeback.

But I feel like it should perhaps be a player that staged a comeback against DT?

Well, you got the correct answer.

These were the participants in the last ever World Doubles Final : Mike Hallett & Stephen Hendry bt. Dennis Taylor & Clifff Thorburn 12-8. The year was 1987.
