There’s something there but … jeez, I don’t know; it just looks like a discarded paper bag to me

I’ve got it!

Can I say now??

Re: Can you spot it?

Postby Prop

I’m saying now. It’s a moth.

Looks like a ‘Mother Shipton Moth’. Down and left of the manmade thing, to the right of the brown leaf. Cream, beige and dark mottled wings.

So is your round 2 guess Moth?

If that’s allowed.

Re: Can you spot it?

Postby Prop

Although looking again it could be an adder’s head. But yeah I’ll stick with moth!

Re: Can you spot it?

I only asked rekoons because he was being half-vague. If I put him down for moth he might, rightly, complain that he didn't nail down his choice as Moth, or, conversely, if it is a Moth then others might complain he didn't actually nail his choice down as a Moth.

Oh yeah. You quoted Rekoons. Apologies, not concentrating.

Uhm yes I would guess moth, but it's prop who found it, not me, so if it turns out to be correct prop guessed it, not me.

So far we've had:

Round 1:
Cheetah
Wallaby/Human in a red and white hat
Fish
Tortoise
Snake
Frog
Field Mouse

And no duplicates.

Round 2: (a very lacklustre affair)
Moth x 2

Third picture on the way in a moment

Round 3: (even more lacklustre)
Filed mouse no.2

Fourth and final picture arriving in a moment.

Maybe that’s a butterfly, not a moth.

I could never see it before but it's quite clear in this latest picture. It's almost dead centre.

Isn’t it mad how nature creates camouflage?

Wings up when landed usually = butterfly

Good observation. Butterfly it is.

Re: Can you spot it?

Postby LDS

It was indeed a butterfly:

Image

What you see in the hunt pictures are the underside of the wings which are not at all as showy as the upper side.

It's a Painted Lady butterfly, notable for being probably the most common butterfly in the whole world. It is native to the warm, dry climates on the fringes of the Mediterranean, hence the nature of its camouflage colouring, and only visits us in the UK and northern Europe during the warmer months of our summer. The only continent where they can't be found is South America.

I wonder what Chengdufan spotted in the bottom right of the original photo. It definitely looked like the head of either a frog or a newt :chin:

Could you zoom in on that section, LDS?

Good thread by the way :hatoff:
