It was Davis indeed at the Goffs Irish Masters.
But it wasn't against Higgins. And name the year please.

Correct!
Davis beat Doherty 6-1, and the only frame Doherty won was due to the 3 miss rule.

A current member of the WST board gave a very good account of himself against the then 5 time champion and one of the all time greats, narrowly losing by 2 frames.
What match was this?

Uk Championship match, player is leading 6-5, he pots a red and snookers himself on the colours, he nominates green and hits the green, the ref calls foul. The ref claims he never heard the player nominate the green, The commentators and crowd are all surprised as they could all clearly hear him nominate it, this player would go on to lose the match 9-7.

84 Coral UK Higgins v Thorburn
It was hilarious, though Cliff didn't think so at the time. It probably cost him the match.

Poor old John Smyth was actually pretty hard of hearing - maybe caused by working for many years as a train driver on the London Underground.

1999 world Final?
I know the ref is Colin Brinded. Not sure if he reffed that Final.

This match started the resurgence of an absolute great of the game, and if he'd lost it he'd be in serious danger of falling out of the Top 16.

Ronnie O'Sullivan vs Andrew Higginson 2012 German Masters quarter finals I think?
Match was kind of a turning point in Ronnie career to an extent. I'm not certain what ranking he was then though.
