D'oh! I thought of homophones for pail, but I didn't even consider that prize might mean prise.

I'll take a stab with David Gray.
Hueless >
GrayClubs >
David Lloyd clubs
I expect it's much tougher than that though.

You’re on the right track. And it’s not much tougher.
The two words will get you to another two words that aren’t a player’s name, but should point to a particular player.

It’s not. But I’ve got a feeling you’re incredibly close. What’s your logic?

Only that black (hueless) clubs reminded me of a deck of cards.

You are incredibly close.
Think again about what else could be hueless. You’ve ticked grey and black off the list, so…
And in the context of cards, what are clubs?

Billy Snaddon
Add on for sum, and then a bit of a stretch...
Sn is the chemical symbol for tin, and you often give people gifts in tins.

Ooh, this is an Iranu one. For some reason I thought it waws an AlfGit. This puts a different slant on things.
Music, TV and Film of certain genres are much more likely to bear fruit...

This logic seems more Prop or AlfGit than Iranu, but anyway...
Mark Joyce?
If you assign a number to each letter of gift G-I-F-T based on alphabetical order, you get 7+9+6+20 Sum them to get 42
Mark Joyce is currently officially ranked 42.

My next guess is Brian Morgan, mainly because Morgan Freeman starred in The Sum of All Fears.
One of the opening scenes in Monty Python's Life of Brian is the three kings bringing gifts to the wrong baby.
