Not O'Donnell. What's your thinking with that one?
The clue leads to a player's given name only.

A few weeks back I was trying to think of a clue and I realised I could use Judd Trump as a clue, but, alas, I cannot remember who that was or why.
For O'Donnell, the O' would be the naught from Juddernaut and Donnell sounds a bit like Donald.
It's really bugging me that I can't remember who I was thinking of.

I like your reasoning. It's much better than my schoolboy thinking!

Walter Stephen Judd -> Stephen
Hendry -> Henry -> "Henry VIII and Trump: History Repeating", a channel 5 documentary.

Not Hendry.
Remember, it's the player's first name only that we're looking for

I feel sure this is easier than it seems at first glance, but both the clues can lead in so many different directions I can't find a foothold to concentrate on to narrow down any kind of short list of possibilities.
For example: It could be Perrie Mans, because there's two Mans in the Premiership, but then Sell doesn't work for Perrie.

I also thought of premiers meaning leaders but looked for the lettering PM to no avail.
I'll try Brecel though as B oris, R ishi and E lizabeth are the initials of our last 3 premiers and then sell is cel.

An excellent guess, but much smarter than the actual reasoning required, so not Stuart Carrington I'm afraid.
