Which British artist, who once appeared very drunk on television in a program called ‘The death of painting’, was born in Croydon?

In a house like that
Your Uncle sausage was born;
Satchel on back he walked to Whitgift
Every weekday morn.

Boys together in Coulsdon woodlands,
Bramble-berried and steep,
He and his pals would look for spadgers
Hidden deep.

The laurels are speckled in Marchmont Avenue
Just as they were before,
But the steps are dusty that still lead up to
Your Uncle sausage's front door.

Pear and apple in Croydon gardens
Bud and blossom and fall,
But your Uncle sausage has left his Croydon
Once for all.

The above is the poem Croydon by which English poet laureate?

The only other laureate I know is (was) Betjeman.

Could be he, I suppose… he did like dissing provincial towns. :chin:

It’s not easy coming up with a John Betjeman question

So … let’s keep it simple :

He was born the same year as my Nan. What year was that, then?

(clue : they’re both dead)
