I think we’re delving back into the mists of time here; possibly something to do with Burroughs & Watts in Leicester Square, but I can’t be more specific than that.
I know it’s not the first ever World Professional Championship in 1927, as that was in Birmingham.

I’ll call time on this question as it’s gone on for so long…
ANSWER
The first ever match in the [World] Professional Snooker Championship. It was between Melbourne Inman and Tom Newman. Inman won 8-5.
