Major final; the two protagonists are the same as the previous year. However, the victor on this occasion is different. The vanquished player will never reach another Ranking Final.

Doesn’t quite fit the criteria, I’m afraid

Although Doherty beat Hunter in the 2001 final, and Hunter reversed it a year later, that was not Ken’s last Ranking Final - he reached the World final in ‘03 and won the Malta Cup in ‘06.

Good effort though

This one might be tricky…

These two great players who would both go on to be multiple world champions met for the first time in a major final of the day. The event is the oldest tournament in the game.

Excellent! Well done.

Some stats I’ve acquired on this match…

[We must remember, professional snooker was pretty much dead in 1964 but the amateur game was thriving. More people played snooker in the UK than at any other time, ever. The era when Amateurs Ruled.]

A multiple World Champion snubs a handshake before this first round clash of a resurrected tournament, going on to lose the match 3-2 despite being a pot away from victory.

1991 Dubai Classic Final, John Parrott beats Tony Knowles 9-3?

A heavyweight clash, fought out in an atmosphere more fitting of a boxing match than a snooker encounter. The two protagonists being sworn rivals and both World Champions. The reigning World Champion was a heavy favourite, having won fourteen of their seventeen meetings, but it was his opponent who prevailed as the encounter went the distance, to the delight of his vociferous fans.

One of the great Crucible comebacks from 5 down with 6 to play. The player who made the comeback found out before the last session that his opponent had been partying and drinking heavily the night before, and that inspired him to make this incredible comeback.

This was the first of two meetings for these two heavyweights of the game in the daddy of all tournaments, both at the same stage and both finished with the same scoreline, the younger man getting his revenge five years later…
