John Higgins.

A keen ear over the last few days would have picked that up :chuckle:

Who did John Higgins beat to win his first Welsh Open title?

Re: Never Ending Quiz

Postby SnookerEd25

I can see your thinking here; Steve bt. John 9-3 in ‘95, Higgins’ first Welsh Open final, but it was not the player he beat to finally get the Welsh under his belt (incidentally in his third Welsh final).

Re: Never Ending Quiz

It was not he; surprisingly, ‘Willo’ and ‘Hoggins’ have never met In the Welsh Open

Re: Never Ending Quiz

No, their only meeting in the Welsh Open was a QF in 2002 (Hendry won 5-2)

Re: Never Ending Quiz

Not Ken

He and Hoggins have met tree times at the Welsh Open - remarkably, the first meeting wasn’t until 2013 (L32) which went to the Irishman by 4-1. John got his revenge the following year (L64) with a 4-0 whitewash, and the ‘rubber match’ took place in 2020, just before COVID, when the Scot took the honours 4-1 (again, L64)

So no meetings at the business end of the tournament, I’m afraid

Hunter played Higgins in the latter’s second Welsh Final, in 1998 which Paul won 9-5 - but was their only meeting in the tournament.

Sixth time lucky for Judders <ok>

After those two final defeats in 1995 & 98, Hoggins finally lifted the big one in 2000. It was a struggle, though; after a nip and tuck affair, Honest John had to pull the last three frames out of the fire to prevail 9-8 :phew:

Lee got his revenge the following year, with a 5-1 QF victory as Higgo fell victim to the Cardiff Curse which decrees that no Scottish first-time Welsh Champion, after two previous final failures, will manage to successfully defend the title the following year… a hex that still manifests itself to this day…

What's the highest ranking position Dominic Dale has achieved so far in his professional Snooker career?

:phew: well, that was exciting.

I knew he'd never quite made the 16, but was just outside.

<ok>
