Closer in spirit, but not Carter and not 'go down without a fight'.
The missing word is a single word.
Not Cahill, either.
Clue: said person made his debut in the 1990s.

Peter Ebdon is 100% right.
'Win' doesn't make sense. You need an antonym for win.

SneakerEd25 sneaks in and steals victory at the last gasp.
Turns out that Ebdon beat Steve Davis and Martin Clark on his debut, but eventually he did lose -- 13-7 to Terry Griffiths.

Perfect.
After his loss to Steve Davis in the ‘89 World final.

Taking a leak? Alex Higgins.
Just a guess but the sinking of the Belgrano during the Falklands conflict coincided with the ‘82 world championship. Alex relieving himself in a Crucible plant pot after a late night practice session did make the headlines. So perhaps to do with that?

Yes, i'll give you that. The exact phrase was 'peeing in a plant pot', but it refers to the incident you describe, and of course it was Alex Higgins.

I’ll give you Jimmy White, although they used “James”. Bottle is also correct.
It wasn’t Steve Davis though.

It was Alex Higgins then, if he called him James.
Am I right, babe?

Two players with contrasting views at the 1987 British Open :
Player 1 : “It’s not about the _____, it’s about the Ranking Points”
Player 2 : “It’s not about the Ranking Points, it’s all about the _____”
Identify the missing word, and name the players.

‘Money’ is the correct word.
Jimmy White was one of the players, he being of the opinion that Ranking Points were more important. So who felt it was all about the money?
(Clue : long retired, not Hallett, Knowles or Foulds)

Not Spencer or Griffiths. Spencer was a compatriot of his, though, in an early team event
