Not Hendry, no. The player in question was not a British citizen.

Correct! At last.

The World Matchplay was conceived by Barry Hearn, and ran as a prestigious event for five years. Featuring the top 12 players in the world, at one time it was the most lucrative tournament on the calendar, the first snooker tournament to offer a top prize of £100,000. The last event ran in 1992, and was won by Wattana. Televised by ITV as a replacement for the World Doubles Championship but dropped after 1992 when they decided to run down all their snooker contracts. The full list of winners was :

1988 : Steve Davis (bt. John Parrott 9-5)
1989 : Steve Davis (bt. John Parrott 18-9)
1990 : Jimmy White (bt. Stephen Hendry 18-9)
1991 : Gary Wilkinson (bt. Steve Davis 18-11)
1992 : James Wattana (but. Steve Davis 9-4)

Well done, VD

I always thought that tournament ended with Gary Wilkinson winning it.

Clive Everton mentioned that towards the end of their contract ITV was cursed by a series of dull, runaway finals. Seems to be true for this tournament at least.

Thank you sir!

Who was the last player to win 80% of his matches in one tournament and yet have an adverse frame record for that same event?

No.

It must be after Zhou because he definitely ended with a negative frames record. Unless Vodka’s including qualifying.
