There was a match in the Power Snooker between Robbo and Murphy where the potential of that game was there for all to see. I think this Shootout thing is all well and good for a one off event per season but it doesn't have any more potential than that. Anyway, I'm going to sit back and enjoy it and I expect a rowdy atmosphere from the crowd. Strict silence is not an option.
it means blackpool is for families not yobs like they had in london for power thing

* 10 minutes per a frame
* Shot clock: First 5 minutes of the match, players have 20 seconds per a shot. Last 5 minutes of a match players have 15 seconds per a shot.
* Players must hit a cushion OR pot a ball with every shot.
* Players ‘lag’ for who breaks
* In an event of a tie: Blue Ball shoot out

I'm giving this one a miss. Visiting friends. I'll have to rely on you guys to give me the usual informed and reasoned analysis that I've come to expect from the Island.

There's bound to be a few blue ball shoot outs. I swear that was one of my ideas.

If this goes well, what are the chances the time given for the latter rounds increases. Chances of the final finishing with half the reds on the table is a sad thing

Snookerbacker makes some interesting points asking whether we could be barking up the wrong tree and maybe the tacticians could surprise us in this event:
http://www.snookerbacker.com/2011/01/22 ... acticians/I don't necessarily agree that having to play a shot fast will take away from the pressure of certain shots because although you won't have the time to ponder and bottle, there's nothing worse than suddenly getting the tightness in the arm when you're actually down on the shot and have just allowed yourself the chance to think of the shots significance when you're in the process of playing it.
I think using the old Ray Reardon tactic of leaving tempters for the opponent could be a good one, especially when they're down to 15 seconds. It'll be interesting to see who tries it out.

i bet you anything theres been players of the slower nature thats been working out a negative formula for this concept.
i think Ebdon for 1 that would want to be seen as a master tactician in this format.

One think SB does not seem to have considered is that some of the players might be more confused than others about some changes in the rules. I'm typically thinking about the rule saying that you have to hit one cushion unless you pot. That's a typical pool rule and one that deems rolling behind a colour to lay a snooker as a foul, hence giving your opponent ball in hand. I'm almost certain that at least one player will be trapped by that rule...
I can see Mark Selby doing very well in this event; he's not slow unless he deliberately slows down (his record in PL is evidence of that) and he's a pool player. ROS, Davis and Jimmy all have played in the Mosconi cup and in pool events, they will have some clues about the tactical aspects those "pool like" rules introduce.

Yes I'm sure there will be panic setting in and a lot of unforced errors such as the cushion hitting rule. All in the name of fun and not sport.

the hitting cushion rule is a interesting one......on the face of it that seems like a rule to nullify negative play we will see.
one thing though the rule will not stop a player coming off a cush to lay in the pack then a player heading back to balk off a touching ball or skim off the pack.

what i can see happening a lot is the reds ending up in balk because a player plays hard off the pack screw back to the top cush so a red or the white hits a cush.

Gutted im out on a works night out that night, w ill be Sky+'ing it and watching selected matches in the morning as build up to the afternoons action. on Sat.
what makes this event for me is just that match after match 32 players in one session and seeing well known slow players having to play like blue fussed flies.
it will be entertaining i guess but we will see.
Never thought I'd hear you claiming somethign like this would be entertaining
Personally, I'm not expecting much. I might give it a watch on the Friday evening and give it a chance, it can't be any worse than Power Snooker
It could be a bit of a laugh, but not much else.
If you want a laugh there are plenty of comedians who can provide that, without the use of a green baize and gimmicks.

Trust me, I don't see this as a serious piece of snooker at all, it's something I'll watch but I doubt I'll knock much of a kick out of it. I hated Power Snooker, but I think I'll be able to watch this with a few cans of cider and enjoy it some bit, though it won't put a patch on a session of snooker at the Crucible.

The football results don't change. The remain the same once the game has finished. Surely, if there's something else you want to watch, you can give the live scores a miss for the week.
