Yesterday Liu Song made the most of his opportunity to compete on the MT despite not qualifying for it, winning his first round match against Ben Wollaston. Zhang Anda, Igor Figeiredo and Patrick Einsle did the same. Anthony McGill confirmed he's one to watch, as is IMO Kyren Wilson.
Alfie Burden, not surprisingly, proved too strong for Reanne Evans.
Today's matches (round 2)
Jimmy Robertson v James McBain
Matthew Selt v Alfie Burden
Mark Joyce v Thanawat Tirapaipongboon
Bjorn Haneveer v Mattew Couch
Tony Drago v Xiao Guodong
David Gilbert v Igor Figueiredo
Barry Pinches v Anthony McGill
Peter Lines v Joe Jogia
David Morris v Patrick Wallace
James Wattana v Liu Song
Paul Davies v Anda Zhang
Jimmy Michie v Jamie Jones
Andy Hicks v Kyren Wilson
Jimmy White v Liam Highfield
Joe Delaney v Patrick Einsle
Michael Judge v Michael White
I expect Liam Highfield to give Jimmy White a serious challenge.
Barry Pinches vs Anthony McGill - competent experience vs talented youth - should be interesting and shame we can't watch Tony Drago vs Xia Guodong as this should be an enternaining affair.

none of the newcomers to the tour will get near the top 64 in the provisional rankings for ages though will they thanks to them getting no starter points for 08/09

he might get near 64 by being the best of the newcomers but cos these new guys are only getting starter points from 09/10 in addition to what they earn this season they will take ages to get into that top 64 bracket cos the guys already on tour have the advantage of having points from 08/09 and 09/10 with them losing points from 08/09 as they gain points from this season.
Obviously the gap will close as the season goes on as the newcomers have no points to lose from 08/09 and their tallies will rise but its still a bit unfair. Someone like Igor for example could be rightly among the top 64 at a cut off rankings point but cos of this he has to wait a few more cut offs and this wait when he could have been further up the rankings with one less qualifier to play could hamper him.
In effect those in the 49-64 bracket have a bit of a safety net this season as they know they will be in the 2nd quakifying round of the qualifiers most of the season probably and wont drop down into the 1st round.

David Gilbert 4-5 Igor Figueiredo
there we are igor through to round 3 to face Fergal O'Brien
what a start to his pro career this is 2,180 points already on top of his 5,040 starter points making 7,220 ok maybe not 68 but he is definitely making strides.
he must be a real natural talent to make the strides he has in a short time on full size tables.

Its hard to know what to expect really, Hes already 33 and has only been playing on the full size tables for about 18 months. Obviously very naturally talented and looking to make the most of the WC onto tour opportunity he got.

James Wattana 0-1 Liu Song
Paul Davies 0-1 Anda Zhang
good start for song and heres a question the way things are going he will have more ranking points Reanne Evans this season so with only 96 places on tour and John Higgins Coming back if he does (cross fingers) who goes off tour Song or the lowest rank pro ?

Song is effectively a wildcard at the moment. He wont even have even been give starter points etc
If Higgins is reinstated back onto tour then Song is gone.
If Higgins is booted off tour then and then only would Song become a fully fledged 96th member of the tour.

Thats a bit unfair on the lad, he should be allowed to stay imo, give him no starter points if you like but let him play the year out
