what are your views on barry hawkins as a player ?

he seems to struggle with the newer conditions these days

GJ,
I dont curently rate him very high, when he broke into the top 32 and reaches a few quarters and semis i thought he was going to be a very good player but he has gone flat and in danger of becoming a journeyman.

Barry has got a son in January 2009 and, as is often the case after the birth of a first child it seems, has gone through a slump in the following months. I have the feeling he's coming back to form though.

A good example of what having only 7ish Televised tournaments, its prevents players like Barry Hawkins progressing career's, which is part of the games problem, not progressing. Change is in the game's air, let’s hope it’s addressed.

Barry Hawkins will be a tough cookie to beat this time of the season.

Did you play him in the 6 reds or see him live ? Seem to remember him making quarters or semis :chin:

Seen him live.

These type of Pro's, on the outskirts, some of them are quality, genuine, & need an in. Having a lot for match practice tunes these players in. Has he got John Higgins (top of my head style) in the 1st round of the WC? If so, I'll say the better he does here, the more tough a match John Higgins will have on his hands.

Seems that Mags was playing okay at Crondon Park this week so that could be tough, champ here 2 years ago. Agree though, these guys need more matches, more chances. I hope Hearn does something about it for next season.

He will.

A few seasons ago I thought Hawkins was a dead cert for the top 16. He's a class player but his weakness is obvious and it's the reason he's not a household name - fear of the winning line. Seen it so many times. I'm sure someone can post some stats of his results and see how many final frame "lottery" deciders he's lost.

Really looking forward to it <ok> we've got our Easter holidays so I'll be able to follow the action any days I'm not working.

It's a pretty decent tournament, would like to see it given a different format as it should be considered one of the major events, and renamed also. A win-by-two format wouldn't go astray, and call it something like the World Matchplay.

But yeah, looking forward to it. I think we could see someone like Shaun Murphy or Stephen Maguire taking the spoils, and Ryan Day always looks strong in the overseas tournaments.

Whoever does win it though can be written off for the World Championship as far as I'm concerned though. Very rare you see anyone putting back to back rankers together, and it's been twelve years since anyone has won the Worlds after winning the penultimate tournament. John Higgins was the last to do it, 1998. He's one of just three, Steve Davis and Hendry being the other two.
