DADDY COOL CARTER EDGES CRUCIBLE THRILLER

Postby footygirl

ALLISTER Carter produced a gritty, teneciaous display to stun former champion Shaun Murphy and book a place in the semi finals at the the Crucible Theatre.

Carter who had resumed 8-8 with Murphy wasted little time in moving in front of the Irthlingborough man with a magnificent break of 122 after Murphy had extended a helping hand by fauiling to find the top cushion with his safety. Carter, who has a six month son called Max proved himself to be Daddy Cool as he wen t behind again at 10-9 when Murphy fired in breaks of 81, 33 and 49 to ask further questions of the Tiptree professionals' fighting spirit.

He needn't have bothered as Carter answered the challenge as he won a nervy frame 20 with no sizeale breaks. In effect it was now down to the best of five as both men now equired three frames for a place in the semi finals. Carter, now warm, ing to his task quickly ruibbed salt into the wound with a moire free flowing display of potting to edge ion fron at 11-10 witgh a 61. Murphy though was not finished and answered the challenge with a break of his own, an effort of 90 good enough to square the match.

The suspicion was growing that we were going all the way and so it proved as both men shared the next twop frames to be level at 12-12. SSo to the shootout. Murphy who will surely regret a simple missed red to the corner to allow Allister a chance to snatch glory. Allister though was also twitching and as they approached the colours came the twist of fate that was to decide the outcvome. Carter ha dmissed a straight yellow, and left it in the jaws. Relief surged across his face as the cue ball rolled to safety behind the green ball. Murphy tried to swerve round, but only succeeded in leaving the yellow hanging over the corner pocket. Carter thrown a chance he didn't expect to get gfrabbed it this time with both hands.

Steadying himse.lf Carter sank the yellow, and with the colours on their spots, with the exception of the black that was on the top cushion but not needed, dispatchded them with complete coolness. As he sun k the pink a sporting Shaun Murphy offered his hand and warm ly congratulated his opponant who now goes on to face Neil Rlolbertson for a place ion the final.
